Update HTC One S to Unofficial AOKP Jelly Bean 4.1 custom ROM

 

There is a new unofficial AOKP custom ROM that can be installed on the HTC One S and now you can install it on your device with help from this articole. 

 Here you will find all the preparation info and the tutorial on how to update and install the ROM of your phone. Continue with the rest of this article only if you’re an advanced Android user.

AOKP has launched some custom ROM builds for various other devices and now some other developer from XDA managed to work with it and create a working ROM for the One S. Most things are working and there aren’t any major bugs reported but, in case you find some of this problems please tell us in comments so that all users that are about to install the ROM will learn about them.

This new custom ROM will bring a ton of new features and functions. You will be able to use the Google Now, smart keyboard, a new and smoother interface and multiple other features that will improve your Android experience. 

Note that this ROM is still under development and it is an experimental build which means that it might be packing some errors. In order to be able to install the unofficial AOKP JB 4.1 custom ROM please read the instructions below and learn how to correctly configure your device. Here’s what you need to know:

• Install this AOKP Jelly Bean build only on the HTC One S with the 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU. It won’t work with the 1.7 GHz One S model nor with any other Android smartphone.
• The HTC One S you’re about to update with this new ROM should have its bootloader unlocked. Also, it should be rooted and running a custom recovery image ( CWM Recovery or TWRP recovery ).
• Create a full Nandroid backup of your currently installed ROM so that in case something goes wrong during the installation of the new firmware, you will still be able to restore your phone to a working state.
• Install HTC Sync Manager as this file is required when it comes to install custom ROMs on HTC One S phones.
• All the files that you consider to be important should be moved on your PC so that you won’t risk anything during the update. After the update is finished you can restore the files back on your phone’s sd card.
• Applications, SMS, Call Logs and APN internet settings should be saved with these applications: AppBAK for Android apps backup | SMS backup & restore | Call Logs backup & restore | APN Settings Backup & Restore. Note that some of these apps are for rooted devices.
• Phone Contacts should be synced with your Gmail account using this guide
• You should enable USB debugging option from the Android Development settings menu.
• Remember to charge your phone’s battery so that it won’t power OFF while you’re flashing the new firmware files.
• Please note that you shouldn’t blame us in case something goes wrong during the installation of your phone. Make sure that you apply all the instructions I’ve listed in the tutorial.
• If you have any trouble understanding the actions that you need to take then you should tell us in comments and we will try to help you in the best way possible. Also, remember that this guide is for advanced users who know how to use CWM recovery, fastboot and bootloader menus along with installing custom ROM files using command prompt screens.

How to install this unofficial AOKP Jelly Bean 4.1 ROM on your HTC One S

PART 1:

1. Download the custom ROM zip file from HERE. Save the file on your PC. Do not extract its contents.
2. Download the Google Apps file for Jelly Bean HERE. Make sure that you download the file for JB 4.1 and not some other file for Gingerbread or ICS / CM9 or older versions.
3. Connect the phone to your PC via USB cable and then copy the files above on its internal SDcard. These files will be needed in the Part 3 of this post.
4. Now, disconnect the phone from computer. Power off the HTC One S as you need to boot into custom Recovery mode.
5. First, we need to enter Bootloader menu and this can be done by holding simultaneously the ‘volume down’ + ‘power’ buttons. It will load the Bootloader menu and you should select the ‘Recovery’ option. Load it.
6. Your phone will now restart in CWM Recovery mode and you should select the ‘backup and restore’ option. After that select ‘backup’ option. Wait for the backup to be completed and after that you should return to the main recovery menu,
7. Select reboot system now.

PART 2:

1. Now, go back to your PC and extract the ‘boot.img’ file from the AOKP Jelly Bean zip file. Extract only that file and place it in a folder that is named ‘fastboot’. You’ll know later why the folder has to be named like that.
2. Next, download Fastboot zip file from HERE. Extract the contents of this zip in the ‘fastboot’ folder that you created at the previous step. You’ll now get 5 files in this fastboot folder.
3. Power off your smartphone.
4. Boot it into fastboot mode by first loading the Bootloader Menu. It can be done by pressing and holding ‘volume down’ + ‘power’ buttons at the same time. Select ‘fastboot’ option from the Bootloader menu and press ‘Power’ to boot it.
5. When the phone enter fastboot mode you should connect the HTC One S to your computer.
6. Now, go to the ‘fastboot’ folder and right-click on the white space in that particular folder. Select ‘open command window prompt’ here from the right-click context menu.
7. When the Command Prompt window is loaded you should enter the following command lines:
   • fastboot devices – This command will make sure that your phone has been detected by the PC. That’s why you should’ve installed the HTC Sync software on your PC, it is the file listed in the preparation guide.
   • fastboot flash boot boot.img
   •  adb reboot bootloader – This line will need to be entered after you see the ‘finished’ or ‘OKAY’ message in the command prompt window.
8. Now you can disconnect the phone from your PC. The phone will go to Bootloader menu once again.

PART 3:

1. You’re now again at the Bootloader menu and you should select ‘RECOVERY’ option. Press ‘power’ to boot in the custom recovery menu.
2. Select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’ option from the CWM recovery main menu. Confirm that you what to apply this step.
3. Now you have to select ‘install zip from sdcard’ and from then on you have to select ‘choose zip from sdcard’. Find the AOKP custom ROM zip file, it is the one downloaded at PART 1 – Step 1 and moved on your device’s internal SDcard at PART 1 – Step 3. Confirm that you want to install it.
4. After the installation is complete you will have to repeat the same previous step and install Gapps for Jelly Bean file.
5. After the AOKP JB ROM and the Google Apps files are installed successfully you should return to the main recovery menu.
6. Select ‘reboot system now’ option and your phone will boot into this new custom ROM.
7. Enter your Google Account details and take control over your phone’s functions and features.

That should do it, now your HTC One S should be running the unofficial AOKP Jelly Bean 4.1 custom ROM. NOTE: In case the first boot process with this new ROM takes over 15 minutes to load or in case the phone gets stuck at the boot logo or it gets into a boot loop, then it means that now all files were installed successfully and you should repeat the entire tutorial once again.
